MRG Safari is for readers of any age with at least a Grade 2 reading ability. For example, a primary school or high school delayed reader could benefit, as could an adult who can only read English at a basic grade-two level.
MRG Safari is not for people who cannot read at all.
The programme’s passages range from early Grade 2 to Grade 8, which is an early adult reading level.
Before signing up, do a quick check to see if the reader will cope with the easiest level before signing up.
Look at the passage extracts below to see how the MRG gradually becomes more complex:
— An extract from an early Grade 2 passage (the easiest level 1):
Yap, Yap, Yap
We have a small dog called Sally. She is worried all the time. Even a small noise makes her panic. What if it is something bad? What if someone is going to hurt me? What if someone is going to hurt my humans? …

Why do Birds Fly in a V Shape?
This autumn look up into the evening sky. Look about half an hour before sunset. You will probably see a flock of birds flying in a V shape. Those birds are getting ready to migrate. They are going to fly far away. They are leaving before winter arrives. They are going somewhere warmer…

Neuroplasticity: The Brain’s Amazing Ability to Adapt
Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument or mastered riding a bike? If so, you have witnessed neuroplasticity in action. Neuroplasticity, or brain plasticity, refers to the brain’s incredible capacity to change and adapt as you learn and grow…
A reading partner or mentor is a parent, older sibling, teacher, therapist, volunteer or older peer at school who is patient and has much stronger reading skills than the reader.
The program requires a reading partner to sit with the reader, to fill out the questionnaire, administer the levelling assessment and work through the programme with the reader.
Choose from our three levels of training for reading partners:
Yes. MRG can be used with different Reading Partners or Mentors, who must be patient and have stronger reading skills that the reader.
A therapist might use MRG with the reader in their practice, and the parent might be the Reading Partner at home for extra practice.
Training in the program is very important

In MRG, ‘Errors are Treasures’ because, once they are clicked, MRG saves them for later training. These errors are practiced, so that when the reader repeats the reading text, they are more likely to improve. They even earn points for the 2 words that they select for deeper training.
Explain to readers why we click on their errors.
When a reader makes an error, be aware of your own frustration, anxiety, surprise or the word “No!” Our responses can be subtle, but most readers can sense them!
It can be surprising if a reader reads a word correctly on one line and then gets it wrong on the next one. Readers do not get words wrong on purpose. There is always a reason. Try to replace that feeling of impatience, worry or the word “NO” with an attitude of “Oh.”
Pause for a second or two before clicking or correcting, because sometimes readers self-correct!
Put the cursor on the word and use prompts such as: “Sound that first letter” or “try again.”
Never let the reader struggle on a word for more than a second or two! Just gently correct the word and click on it.
Remember that the point of reading is to COMPREHEND the content. Press PAUSE whenever necessary to discuss the meaning of the text.
If your reader has a strong reaction to errors, you can choose not to click on errors as they read. Just help them. Once they have completed the text, press PAUSE (not stop). Let the reader decide on a few errors to select. Then press RESUME and quickly click on these errors and then press STOP. Remind them that they will get points for working on these words.
How does MRG work, and how do I access training?
Training is needed to ensure that MRG is used to its full potential. Here are some ways to access this:
I want parents to register and use MRG independently at home:
MRG is a mentored, online reading intervention, so each reader needs a patient and trained Reading Partner who can treat errors like treasures because readers learn from their errors.
Parents can access training in the following ways:
I want to register my institution and use MRG at school:
My child’s school/therapist wants me to register online and do MRG at home with my child
Simply log onto https://mrg.azurewebsites.net/
Choose from our three levels of training for parents:
My child’s school wants me to sign up and pay so the school can access MRG for one-on-one sessions during school:
Click here for instructions on registering and paying for your child to be part of an institution.
My Reading Gym Safari can be accessed online via a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or iPad (smartphone screens are too small). Make sure you have access to sound and YouTube.
For individual users, or institution subscriptions where the parent pays, you can see the expiry date at the bottom of the MRG menu.
Two weeks before your subscription expires, we will send you an email requesting that you renew it. We recommend that you renew before your account expires. If you miss this, you will get the message: “Your account has expired” and you can then renew.
Click here for how to renew you reader’s account that is part of an institution.
If the reader is part of an institution, and the reader has not read for 3 or more months, the system will automatically de-activate them. Contact the Admin of the institution to re-active the account, or email: support@myreadinggym.co.za.
Once re-activated, all the reader’s information is saved and they will be able to continue from their last reading session.
Try a different browser like Firefox or Chrome.
Make sure you have the updated version of the browser installed.
Are your speakers plugged in?
Do you have the correct URL address which is https://mrg.azurewebsites.net/
Remember to Treat Errors as Treasures because readers learn from their mistakes. Choose from our three levels of training for reading partners:

Access to all the functions of a normal account.
Additional functions which allow them to:
MRG passages and questions start at Grade 2 reading level and go through to Grade 8, which is an early adult reading level. There are eight levels altogether. There are enough passages to give challenged readers plenty of practice at each level. MRG is suitable for anyone with a basic Grade 2 reading ability, whatever their age. However, children younger than 7 are not yet ready to start the programme

MRG will automatically increase the reading level after 15 passages if the reader consistently reads fluently, with good comprehension and accuracy.
If you would like to move the reader up a level before the 15 passages:
If you would like to move the reader down a level because it seems too difficult:
Reading rates depend on many factors, including the reader’s reading abilities, concentration and the background knowledge a child might about the text.
MRG’s aim is to help challenged readers read with good comprehension, regardless of rate. There is no point to reading fast without comprehending the text! From Grade 3 and above, we would aim for above 80 words per minute. Some readers might never attain this, and still be able to comprehend well.
Other readers might read very fast but have poor comprehension. These readers should be encouraged to SLOW DOWN and engage with the content.
