What is My Reading Gym Safari?
MRG Safari is an online reading programme developed by experienced speech language therapist Elizabeth Nadler-Nir, of Cape Town. MRG is dual purpose. It is a useful tool for speech and language therapists, and learning support teachers, in their own therapy rooms or with reading partners at home, schools, NGO’s or at work. The challenged reader’s partner could be a parent, older child or anyone who has a better reading ability than the reader.

It identifies a reader’s area of challenge and then tailors itself to working on these. It is designed for delayed readers of any age who can read at a basic grade 2 level. What’s this?

How does MRG Safari work?
It’s a partnership! The developing reader works online alongside a real- life mentor. This could be a therapist, a parent, a responsible and committed older child or a teacher. Reader and mentor work through a series of reading passages starting at the reader’s own level of ability. During the reading intervention, they work on word meanings (vocabulary), practise their error words, select phonics and practise common letter patterns, engage in repeated reading and answer questions.
Why do both the developing reader and mentor enjoy the programme?
The inbuilt reward system takes them on a safari where rewards are earned. Instant progress is displayed, and passages are short, interesting and varied. Both developing reader and mentor learn!
